Rainy Saturday

So… today is a lazy, rainy saturday.  The boys are hanging out and playing and I’ve got a cool little computer sitting in my lap.  It’s the perfect opportunity to blog… only problem is, I don’t have much to say.  But, I’ll probably come up with something to ramble about anyway…

Another video… everyone will enjoy (especially nerds)

This once kinda speaks for itself.

Nice marketing, Google.

I’m confused

So, today, I ran across an article about the soon to be announced iphone os 4.0. The article was a collection of rumors about new features expected to be offered. I was curious. The iphone was, by all account, a revolutionary device. What amazing new things would this new OS do?

So… I read….

Multitasking

Huh? Oh, right. Iphone still doesn’t support multitasking for third party apps. That’s why iphone can’t do awesome stuff like Locale or FoxyRing.

Homescreen Contacts

This one was a surprise to me. I had no idea that the homescreen of the iphone was so locked down that you couldn’t even add a direct link to a fave contact. I have a shortcut to mandy on my homescreen on my droid. Use it all the time. It seems iphone OS doesn’t support this, though.

The rest of the rumors were legitimate features. But, it stunned me to realize that the above listed items were missing and considered ‘advancements’ for the coming OS.

Behold the power of advertising, eh?

Direct calling and texting (SMS) on windows mobile with google voice

This post today is a bit different than my normal ones.  This post isn’t really intended for my “usual” audience, such as it is.  Rather, this post is a service to the internet at large.  I recently switched over to using Google Voice, a service that I’m very much a fan of.  However, the switch wasn’t without its headaches.  After a lot of searching, tweaking, and experimenting…  I finally figured out a way to deal with most of the problems.  This post is an attempt to roll together all the information I found to help other folks who might have the same problem.

Got a netbook

What’s a netbook, you ask? A netbook is a very tiny little laptop with a very tiny pricetag. The one I got was used, so I was able to pick it up for just $200 bucks. The idea behind them is that they are just little tiny little laptops that are extremely portable and easy to use for common internet tasks. Mine just weights 2.5 lbs and has a 10″ screen. Is is an MSI Wind U-120. It is a really neat little gadget… I plan on using it as a portable media player and movie player for the kids when we travel. I’m also writing this post on it, just to test out some stuff. So far, I really really like it.

This is stunning

simply stunning:

Saw this today and thought it was really cool.

Huge announcement PLUS Weekend Recap!!!

So… last weekend was pretty crummy, right?  Flooded house and all that.  There was, however, one small gleaming ray of sunshine.  We got paid, which put my personal savings to the point that I could order my phone that I’ve been longing for!  It came in on Wednesday and I’ve been in love ever since.

Announcement

I have added a new page here. Well, a re-work of an old page really. Hit the ‘About Caleb’ link in the upper right corner. Because the page contains a significant amount of personal information, I have password protected the page so that random folks can’t just stop by and read my life story. The idea here is for old or new friends to be able to catch up with me. So, in order to get the password, just click on my name on the welcome page to drop me an email. Let me know who you are and ask for the password and I’ll get it back to you ASAP. Sorry for the hassle, but I want to be able to filter out some of the flotsam that can be found here on the good ole internet.

The end of an era

Some of you who read my MySpace blog might recall several posts I had extolling the virtues of my Dell Axim x51v PDA.  It was a good PDA…  a great one in fact, but I realized a few months ago that I just wasn’t using it as much as I should.  For the most part, it was a toy rather than a tool.  I wondered if I could sell it, so I went to check out eBay.  Much to my shock, what was a $450 gadget 2 years ago was a $200 gadget today.  That is amazing value retention for electronics.  I think it is probably because the x51v was the last “true” PDA before people started making smartphones.  Some folks hate smartphones, so there’s a market out there for good PDAs.

So, I posted a craiglist ad.  After several contacts that turned into nothing, I finally sold it to a dude today for $200.  I was happy to sell it, but sort of sad to see it go.  Thanks for the memories, x51v!  Thanks for the $200, craigslist dude!
